That’s cool.  I won’t be reading the Seattle Times Sports section again.  As a reader, I don’t have to be told off and given lame excuses in a most unprofessional way by an insecure editor and journalist that can’t get his facts right.

Long live the eP-I!!!!

Why would I send such an email?  And why would I cc most of the known Seattle newspaper editors and sports columnist?

Well, anytime HallRo agrees with my actions, I know I’ve done good.

This email is an outcome of customer service gone wrong.  So anyone who deals with clients and/or customers, please take note, this is a lesson on what not to do.

It started – believe it or not – the day before prior to the last P-I print edition.  I read an article in the Seattle Times that once again appeared to contained incorrect info.  Mistakes have been a consistent theme this year in Huskies basketball articles.  I sent the following email to the journalist and cc’d sport@seattletimes.com pointing out the mistake:

Sorry to have to call you out . . . but there has been wrong info in articles about UW basketball consistently, especially over the past few weeks.

The Bulldogs are 23-12.  It wouldn’t bother me if this was just a singular mistake.  But the Times has been pretty consistent in reporting facts such as records, score, etc incorrectly.  It is usually the P-I that reports accurate information, that informs me of the Times repeated mistakes.

Man, I am going to miss the P-I if this is the type of inaccurate reporting I can expect from the Times.

I was responded to near immediately by the journalist.  He was rude and defensive in his response, but as it turns out, he was not factually wrong.  He had listed Mississippi State REGULAR Season record, and did not include the 4 additional wins collected during the SEC tournament.

No biggie.  Poor writing that created confusion.  I figured we could leave it at that.

But NO . . . the journalist had to email back with a parting shot:

“You may have a point but in the interest of space — I don’t have unlimited room — I figured most people could figure that out.”

I sent a final response figuring we were done:

In the interest of space, I don’t think that last sentence was necessary.

I will be enjoying the articles by Percy Allen and Dan Raley in the future.

Good luck.

The Fucker wrote me back with more excuses and explanation.  A journalist this insecure is not worth reading, so I gave him the last word.  I was finished with the exchange . . . . so I thought.

7 hours later Don Shelton – the Dick Shine Sports Editor for the Times – decides to join the exchange (This is an exact copy of his email.  Please take note of the so called English used in his response and remember this is an editor):

Scott,

Not sure what you’re referring to, because our stories all said the
Bulldogs are 23-12. Condotta’s story mentioned that their record during
the regular season, so many be that confused you.

As far as the P-I goes, I’ll put our accuracy, reporting, editing and
just about anything else you want to compare anytime. By almost any
measure – national, regional awards won, number of mistake in their
section and of course the circulation of those two papers, 200,000 to
120,000.

Don

I conceded.  Dick Shine Don’s email was convincing, so I responded with email stating such, figuring that would put an end to this nonsense:

Don’t worry.  I’ll never report when I think a fact is wrong again.

The Times is fucking amazing.  LONG LIVE THE TIMES!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently Don was not satisfied with his victory and my concession:

Not sure what you’re talking about. We weren’t wrong in this case.

Not saying we’ve never made a mistake – no newspaper can say that – but
I think you have blinders on when it comes to the P-I.

Don

At about the same time Dick Shine Don sent this email, about 200 P-I staffers had just submitted their final alcohol-soaked articles, columns, and stories for the last P-I print edition deadline and were heading to Buckley’s to soak their sorrows in beer and liquor.  Since Don showed no respect for people in his own profession, I figured I could show the same lack of respect for staffers on the Times:

Art Thiel v Steve Kelley and Jerry Brewer.  Are you freaking kidding me.

Maybe Kelley and Brewer could carry Thiel’s jockstrap . . . if they both lifted at the same time together  (Do we do it on three? . . . Or one, two, three, then do it?)

Well Dick Shine Don – in his relentless way – decides to disregard common sense, compassion for his fellow newspaper people, and any sense of current event, let alone professionalism, and decides to respond that next morning:

Hey, Scott.

I wouldn’t hire Art Thiel. Good guy but I think he has gotten soft. He
actually brags about not writing deadline columns any more and that’s
the justification he used for not writing the next day when Griffey
signed with the Mariners. As a sports editor, my columnists need to
write and react to the day’s news, not wait a day or two and write when
it’s convenient for them.

Well, I figured there was only one way to handle such a Jackass.  Please read my email at the top of this article.

And I am proud to say I have not read the Seattle Times again – not in print nor in pixel.

The Achilles Heal

March 23, 2009 · 1 Comment

An Achilles tendon rupture is traumatic.  It is by far the most disruptive injury, repair, and recovery I’ve experienced.  For those of you who know me,  you know I have had my share of scrapes and bruises.  I have had my face stitched 3 different times.  I have had to rush to the ER because of glass in my eye and another time when my middle finger was nearly sliced off – and that was just from bottling beers at Hales Brewery.  I had what appeared to be two bite marks from a yet to be identified Amazonian creature that caused my entire arm to “shingle”.

I also had ACL tear leading to knee reconstructive surgery.  That was 15 year ago.  From what I remember, the knee recon was not nearly as disruptive and harsh as this surgery.

Simply said – don’t do it!!  Don’t rupture your Achilles!!

Today my repaired Achilles has nearly reached an estimated 50% integrity.  It is also about 2 1/2 month since my injury.  I have kept a detailed timeline of my recovery in an excel workbook.  Below are the major milestones.

Jan 6th: Injury.  HallRo – thanks for scrapping me off the front couch at the YMCA and rushing me to the ER.

Jan 9th: Surgery. Foot in boot. Immobile. Can’t remove. No weight bearing. Foot at 120 degree angle.

Jan 19th: 10 days post-op. 1st post-op appt. Stitches removed. Foot back in boot at 120 degree angle. Immobile/ no weight. Not allowed to remove boot.

Feb 13th: 35 days post-op.  2nd post-op appt.  Allowed to take boot off.  Allowed to put foot at neutral position (90 degree angle).  Move foot for first time.  Start weight bearing on foot.  Foot severely swollen.  Need crutches to walk.

Feb 17th: 39 days post-op.  1st PT appt.  Achilles is estimated to be 15% integrity.  Its estimated to gain 1% per day for the next 45 days.  I do simple exercises.

Feb 19th: 41 days post-op.  2nd PT appt.  Test weightbearing ability – able to put 40lbs on foot.  Do weightless squats.  Trying to step forward and shift sideways.

Feb 23rd: 45 days post-op.  3rd PT appt.  Ride stationary bike.  Able to put 100lbs on foot.  Set goal to walk @ Mar 3rd PT appt.

Feb 26th: 48 days post-op.  4th PT appt.  Full weight bearing on foot.  Do weights for 1st time – leg extensions, adduction, & abduction (think thigh master).  Start of 3 times a week weight program.

Feb 27th: 49 days post-op.  Take 1st unassisted step!! (I do them while in boot, but no crutches.  Its 52 days since injury).  Leg feels strong/ swelling in foot down.  1st time don’t wear boot to bed.

Feb 28th: 50 days post-op.  Take 1st unassitsted step without boot (53 days).

Mar 2nd: 52 days post-op.  5th PT appt.  Allowed to go past neutral position with foot (< 90 degree angle).  Add more weights and other exercises to program.  Dedicating about 3 hrs/ day 3 times a week and 2 hrs/ day 2 times a week for PT.

Mar 12th: 62 days post-op.  7th PT appt. Walk for first time outside in my own two shoes (no boot).  Target 30 min walks in city in shoes (no boot).  See therapist only once per week.

Mar 17th: 67 days post-op.  Drive for the first time since injury (70 days).

Here are some of things that happened in the 53 days between the injury and my first unassissted/ unbooted step:

- The end of the worst US presidency ever – George W Bush leaves the White House.

-  The beginning of what may be the best US presidency ever and the first black president is inaugurated – Barack Obama arrives to the White House.

- The Dow dropped nearly 2000 pts. from 9015 to 7062.

- Alpental lost nearly 40 inch snow depth from its base, dropping from about 90 in to 50 in.

- Ken Griffey Jr became a Mariners again.

- T.J. Houshmandzadeh leaves his watch with Jim Mora . . .essentially guaranteeing he’ll be a Seahawk after the weekend.

- The UW Huskies Basketball team bring winning back to Seattle.

- I am still unemployed.  But I am about to begin discussion of my next venture – Feld Enterprises.

Life after the P-I

P-I Final Cover

P-I Final Cover

This morning the Seattle Post-Intelligencer did not go to press.  It had been the oldest morning newspaper in the state of Washington.  Going to press for the first time in 1863.  It will never go to press again.

I picked this day to start my blog.  I am not promising to replace the P-I.  My blog most likely will be less timely, less relevant, cruder, ruder, and at times just dumb.  But with Seattle Times being the only local daily available in print, I hope to offer a solid alternative reading option.

It is a sad day in Seattle.  I grew up reading the P-I.  I aligned with their politics and opinions.  My favorite local columnist – Art Thiel – writes for P-I (and will continue with the online addition).  My favorite politcal cartoonist – David Horsey – contributes to the P-I (also to continue with online addition).

I agree a daily offered in pixels only is much better for the environment.  But the P-I not going to press adds to my concern for the state of our media and the quality of journalism provided us.  The lack of critical of journalism is well documented. As Daniel Sinker, in a recent post in the Huffington Post, points out, investigative reporting “helps to keep our leaders honest, our water clean, our businesses pure”, it is “vital to the functioning of a democracy”.

The death of another daily can only mean our leaders of government and industry need to answer fewer questions.  And that is not good.

This leads me to the question, when we have to rely on a comedy show, on a comedy network, to ask tough questions of business leaders, how well is our democracy functioning?

I’ll end this post with a link to the final print article from Art Thiel:

Print fades, mourning becomes electronic

And the final print cartoon from David Horsey:
